STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONFIGURING SOUND.

The SETSOUND program won't recognize my sound card or no sound is heard.
When I select Auto Detect from sound SETSOUND, it locks up my machine.
I don't get any music playing even though I setup my MIDI driver in SETSOUND.
I don't get any digital sound.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONFIGURING SOUND.

1. Assuming you have already successfully installed Burnout, left click the icon to run Burnout in your Start Menu. The Burnout menu will appear. Select "Sound Setup."

2. The "Sound System Configuration Utility" screen will appear. Using your arrow keys, highlight "Select and configure a MIDI Music Driver" and hit "enter." A list of "Available MIDI Drivers" will appear.

3. Using your arrow keys, highlight "Creative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible." Hit the "enter" key to select this driver.

4. Hit the "enter" key again to "Attempt to configure sound driver automatically." When the "Device detected successfully" message appears, hit the "enter" key to move on. If an error message appears, contact Technical Support.

5. Press the Down Arrow key on your keyboard once, then hit the "enter" key to "Select and Configure digital audio driver."

6. Use your arrow keys, highlight "Creative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible." Hit the "enter" key to select this option.

7. Hit the "enter" key again to "Attempt to configure sound driver automatically." When the "Device detected successfully" message appears, hit the "enter" key. If an error message appears, contact Technical Support.

8. Next, hit the Down Arrow key four times to highlight the "Done" menu option. Hit the "enter" key to end sound setup.

9. You can now left-click on "Run Burnout" to play!

NOTE:
These sound configuration instructions should work for almost all currently available sound cards. These instructions provide the minimum level of performance from your card. You may choose to reconfigure Burnout's sound by selecting another card from the "Select … driver" menu. However, your safest bet is always selecting the "Creative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible" option. .

It is sometimes possible for the auto detect routines in the setup program to mistake the type or configuration of your sound card. Verify that the settings are correct using a setup program provided by the sound card manufacturer. If all else fails, the basic Sound Blaster configuration seems to be the "universal" standard (assuming the card is supposed to be compatible).

When I select Auto Detect from sound SETSOUND, it locks up my machine.

The detection routines try and find sound cards by writing and reading from common ports and I/O addresses. Sometimes there are devices connected to these ports that don't like the detection routines writing what they perceive as bogus data. This is a rare occurrence and has typically been associated with SCSI adapters. There is no way around this other than not auto-detecting and manually setting the configuration.

I don't get any music playing even though I setup my MIDI driver in SETSOUND.

Burnout doesn't contain any MIDI music. The setup was built into the SETSOUND program and is not needed for Burnout.

I don't get any digital sound.

First try running the SETSOUND program. Select the sound card you have installed (or let setup autodetect it). If this doesn't fix the problem, make sure the volumes of the sound effects are turned up. Do this in the Options area under the Sound tab.
