There is a network game started but it doesn't show up when I try to join it.

While playing a network game it looked like I won the race but the results showed that I lost.
When trying to connect using direct connect serial, the machines never connect.
The modem does not seem to be responding to Burnout.
The modem dials but will not connect.

There is a network game started but it doesn't show up when I try to join it.

This can happen sometimes. To have Burnout recheck the network for a game, close and open the Game tab until the game shows up.

While playing a network game it looked like I won the race but the results showed that I lost.

This is caused by the latency of the network. Sometimes a packet will take too long to show the car in the proper position. Burnout does it's best to estimate the positions of the cars even if it doesn't get a packet but it can't predict everything 100% a ccurately. However, even though the visual results may be wrong, the actual results on the timecard are correct because Burnout sends a final packet that contains the actual times so that the real winner can be determined.

When trying to connect using direct connect serial, the machines never connect.

Make sure that the correct COM port is selected for each computer and that they are both operating at the same baud rate. If this doesn't remedy the problem you may have an improperly wired cable. Direct connect requires the use of a Null Modem cable whic h is different than a standard serial cable. Null modem adapters can be purchased that will convert a standard serial cable to a null modem cable.

The modem does not seem to be responding to Burnout.

First check the COM port and cable connections. If this doesn't solve the problem, check the command string. If there is an error in the command string the modem won't execute it. To test the modem connection, replace the initialization string with ATZ an d see if the modem then attempts to dial.

The modem dials but will not connect.

Different modems have different characteristics and protocols making this problem a difficult one. If possible, attempt to connect to another modem using a communication program. If this succeeds, the problem is probably in the setup string (see above sol ution).
