Bethesda Softworks Unveils the Elder Scrolls 3 Construction Set to Ship with Morrowind

Tools Used to Create Epic RPG Will Also Allow Players to Create Unique Experiences and Share Them

June 9, 2000 (Rockville, MD) - Bethesda Softworks™ today unveiled plans to ship its upcoming epic role-player game, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind™, with the Elder Scrolls 3 Construction Set™, which will give players unlimited control over the gameplay elements. The same tools that the development team uses to create the game will allow players to expand the game in any way they wish.

The ES3 Construction Set allows users to create, modify, and edit any data for use with Morrowind. It does it all - from building landscapes, towns, and dungeons to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, races, creatures, magic, and more. Users will be able to create their own adventures and other players will be able download them directly into their existing game.

"Very early on in development our goal was create a role-playing operating system and not just a particular type of game," said Morrowind Project Leader, Todd Howard. "The ES3 Construction Set is the main result of that thought process. Users can change and grow the game, and trade these files online for a never-ending game experience. It's a very big step for us and the Elder Scrolls community."

The entire system is built on a "plug-in" architecture. Each file created in the ES3 Construction Set is a modification to the world. When you play Morrowind, you select which files you wish to play with. A single plug-in may contain a new character in a certain town that has a quest for you. Another plug-in may simply be a new sword that is available. Plug-ins can change or add anything, and they will work within your current game. Plug-ins can even change how the game plays, with settings for everything from movement speeds to player level increases.

The ES3 Construction Set also comes with it's own scripting language. These scripts allow users to create new functionality for game objects that the designers had not envisioned. Extensive help files give tutorials on the best way to create adventures.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is the next title in Bethesda Softworks' epic, award-winning RPG series that includes Arena (1994 RPG of the year) and Daggerfall™ (1996 RPG of the year). Morrowind is scheduled for release on the PC later in 2001. For more information on Morrowind, visit the official Elder Scrolls Web site at www.elderscrolls.com.
